what is a Danish Folk High School
lf you are new to the Danish education system, the concept of a Folk High School might be completely new to you. Here is what you need to know:
A Danish folk high school is a place for learning without exams or grades. You are here to develop yourself, try new things, and challenge your limits without the pressure of tests. You can develop your skills in sports, creativity, music, or personal growth, while also building friendships and learning to work with others.
Students live, eat and train together and take part in a mix of classes, workshops, and social activities. You might spend the morning training in your favorite sport, join a jam session in the afternoon, and end the day with group activities, discussions, or social events. It’s a place to try new things, discover talents you didn’t know you had, and explore your interests.

Gerlev is a renowned folk high school located just one hour from Copenhagen. Our students are typically between 18 and 30 years old and come from all over Denmark, with a handful of international students joining each term. Whether you are taking a gap year, looking to master a new sport, or wanting to make friends, Gerlev is your home away from home.
At Gerlev you choose your own subjects – from creative subjects, music and band, personal development, and Movie Classics, to a broad range of sports like Functional Training, Outdoor, Dance, Sport 360, and Football. Friendship, play, and personal growth are part of everyday life, giving you the chance to explore new skills, follow your passions, and create memories that last a lifetime.
Choose Your Stay
You can choose between the following stays at Gerlev Sports Academy – with new terms opening for enrollment on an ongoing basis.
Most students join us for either an autumn term of approximately 4 months or a spring term of around 6 months. Each stay follows the rhythm of the season, but the core experience remains the same: time to explore new interests, develop your skills, and be part of a shared everyday life with others.
