What to expect...
At Gerlev, we welcome students from all over the world—curious, open-minded young people who want to try something new, have fun, and create unforgettable memories. A semester at Gerlev is more than just a stay abroad—it’s a unique experience focused on sports, play, and community.
We believe that international students bring valuable perspectives and make life at Gerlev even more vibrant. In return, you’ll gain a unique insight into Danish youth culture, everyday life, and sports traditions.

I chose Gerlev because I wanted to try many different sports. In Japan, it’s common to focus on just one sport, but there aren’t many places where you can experience a variety of sports. We do a lot of sports during the week and a lot of fun activities, and the schedule is pretty full. And we have the coolest, greatest, most creative weekends ever.

I could see pictures on their website, and I saw that they have basically everything here, like everything related to sports, and the facilities are insanely good, and that really drew my attention.

I love how easy it is to make friends even though we don't speak the same language and like how nice and open people are here - and they're all so sweet and they all really wanna get to know you. Mostly just how open and fun people are and how easy it is to make friends if you're just you know if you're willing to.

Classes and Language
As a Danish folk high school, most classes and daily interactions take place in Danish, since the majority of students are Danish.
As an international student, you’ll be part of this environment from day one. Don’t worry – many international students quickly get used to it and begin to understand basic Danish over time.
Danes generally speak very good English, and both students and teachers are always ready to help when needed. Your willingness to communicate and be part of the community is what matters most.
You will be included in all aspects of daily life at Gerlev—classes, shared events, and social activities. This includes community structures such as peer groups, “family groups”, and school meetings, which are all designed to support well-being and connection between students.
Bridge the gap - translations
At the start of every semester, Gerlev brings together a dedicated team of Translation Peers—a group of motivated Danish students who step up to bridge the gap between languages and cultures.
We believe that everyone should feel at home from the very first day. That’s why, during our major shared events like Gerlev Evenings, school meetings, and inspiring guest talks, we offer live translation. By simply grabbing a headset, our international students can tune into a real-time English version of the presentation, provided by a fellow student.
Stay Connected: Never miss the discussion, when someone talks from the heart og an important update from the teachers. You will be part of the conversation, always. Feel Included: Our translations isn’t a stiff formal service; it’s a student-led initiative built on support and shared understanding. Supportive Vibes: No matter if you sit and translate or just listen, this program helps us come closer together as a global community.
It’s all about making sure everyone is part of the conversation from day one.
your International contact teacher
There will be a dedicated International Contact Teacher (ICT) who supports international students throughout their stay.
THE CONTACT TEACHER WILL: Welcome you and organize meetings – specifically for international students Coordinate the Translation Peer system Arrange Danish lessons – often taught by Danish students Help you settle in and support you with challenges related to living abroad
Their role is to help you feel comfortable, included, and at home at Gerlev.
arrival and Onboarding
When you arrive at Gerlev, you’ll be shown to your room and meet your roommate.
During your first week, you’ll take part in a carefully planned introduction program together with all the other new students starting together. This helps you get to know the school, your classmates, daily routines, values, schedules, and facilities—so you can quickly feel at home.
You will also be invited to a special welcome session for international students, where you’ll get extra guidance and an introduction to life at Gerlev.
