We begin with singing

Each morning begins with a morning assembly, where we sing a song from the Danish Folk High School Songbook together, followed by Mass Choir led by Hans Christian.

The day is divided into three workshops. Here you choose – according to interest – the areas you want to immerse yourself in every day throughout the week. Your first workshop is in the morning.

and end with singing

After a delicious lunch, you have your second and third workshops. In the workshops, you will experience some of the best teachers from Denmark and the rest of the world, who provide plenty of challenges for both beginners and experienced students.

The evenings offer a teachers’ concert, Gospel Church, Open Mic Night, Campfire and singing and a Celebration Banquet.

Module 1

Teachers: Mark De-Lisser & Benjamin Jochimsen

Mark De-Lisser and Benjamin Jochimsen lead this gospel choir. A gospel choir hardly needs an introduction! It is everything you love – powerful songs, beautiful ballads, laughter and fellowship.

Sommergospel Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teachers: Volney Morgan, Angel Morgan & Stephen Nørrelykke

Gospel with funk in the engine. Here the rhythm is something you sing and move to. Volney and Angel Morgan and Stephen Nørrelykke lead the work with grooves and plenty of movement.

We will sing with the beat and use our bodies as well as our voices. And yes, you will be moving while you sing.

SommerGospel

Underviser: Sofie Hermind & Georg Weilguny

Lots of bling, lots of choreography and tons of star moments. We work all week to create a fabulous show choir performance for Friday night. Everyone finds their inner star, and together we make each other and the gospel songs shine brightly. We sing both as a choir and in smaller groups, if you like. We learn magical songs that are tied together by a story, work on physicality and movement in the songs and focus on how to take the music beyond the edge of the stage and into people’s hearts – as one big Show Choir.

Gospelkoncert

Teacher: Anders Butenko

What happens to a song when you stand in front of an audience and sing it? With Anders Butenko, we work on the choices you make as a lead singer on stage: your first line, your timing, your body and your attention.

You will sing, try another approach and hear the difference. This is for you if you want to work directly on performing a lead, not just practicing it.

Max 15 participants

SommerGospel

Teacher: Laura Kjærgaard

Nerves can arrive before you sing the first note. Laura Kjærgaard works with grounding and focus, both before a lead and while you are singing it. We look at what happens in the body and try concrete ways of coming back to the song.

You do not need to get rid of every nerve to sing well. If you want more steadiness when you stand with a microphone, this module gives you a place to work on it.

Max 15 participants

IMG 2052 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Tine Hamburger

This vocal technique workshop is taught in German. Tine Hamburger helps you explore what your voice does in a song and what you can change when a phrase is difficult. We try different sounds and put the technical ideas to work in the music.

Come if you want to understand your voice better and use that knowledge while you sing. We don’t use just one specific vocal technique, but include the best from many different vocal theories.

SommerGospel

Teacher: Nina Luna

Our brain and body work together when we sing, but we don’t always feel like we have control over our voice. There are lots of thoughts and decisions we make unconsciously when we sing, which show up in our body language and our singing. We will sing together as a choir, and through conversation, exercises and good tricks, we will practice optimizing our mental resources when we sing. A power plant is a plant that creates electricity. Our brain is a power plant in itself, but only when we become aware of where we put our energy do we learn to do something new and become more skilled and knowledgeable about ourselves.

Max 50 participants

Nina Luna, Sommergospel

Teacher: Claes Wegener

Pulse is the choir that embraces rhythm, stomping, drumming, shouting, moving and grooving.

We will, as a group, make the songs stronger and be more in sync by working with rhythm and feeling the pulse.

International Gospel - Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Module 2

Teacher: Trey McLaughlin

If you want to feel the pulse of American gospel music in 2027, come sing with Trey McLaughlin. A gospel choir is where we all feel at home. Now come experience your home in a brand new way!

Trey is very detail-oriented, so if you feel like going deeper into the songs, this is for you.

Teacher: Jan Meyer

Jan Meyer leads this gospel choir in German. We learn the songs, work on the parts and put rhythm and phrasing into the whole choir. You will sing the music in English while the teaching takes place in German. Choose this module if you want gospel choir singing with German as the teaching language.

SommerGospel

Teacher: Mette Risager

A song you know well can still take you somewhere new. With Mette Risager, we try different ways of singing familiar material. A change in phrasing, tempo or focus can give a line a different meaning.

You will sing an idea, hear what it does and try again. This is for lead singers who enjoy turning a song around to see what else is in it.

Max 15 participants

SommerGospel

Teacher: Tine Hamburger

You may know the melody. The next question is how you want to sing it. Tine Hamburger helps you try different sounds, phrases and ways of using the words, so you can hear what works in your own voice.

We work with the choices you make as a lead singer, rather than with a sound you have to copy. Come if you want to get clearer about the way you sing a song.

Max 15 participants

SommerGospel

Teacher: Carla Jane

You have sung lead before and want to go further with a song. Carla Jane works with phrasing, dynamics and the way your choices reach the people listening. We sing a line, change something and hear what happens.

There is space to work on what already serves the song and what could be clearer. Choose this module if you want a new challenge after your first solos.

Max 15 participants

IMG 2062 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Sofie Hermind

For lead singers with experience, Sofie Hermind brings the song, the body and the stage into the same work flow. We look at interpretation, timing and how movement can help a performance. You will have room to test an idea and sharpen it.

The interesting choices are often in the details: where you hold back, where you take the risk. Come if you want to take your lead singing further.

Max 15 participants

IMG 2316 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teachers: Lene & Stephen Nørrelykke

Complete Vocal Technique has to work when the song starts. Lene and Stephen Nørrelykke bring technical choices into real phrases and songs. We try a sound, hear what it does and decide whether it helps the music.

This is for you if you want to connect the technical terms with what happens when you sing a full song. We work with the voice you use in your music.

IMG 8836 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Georg Weilguny

A song can start with a line, a melody or a rhythm you cannot get out of your head. Georg Weilguny helps you develop ideas for words, music and the shape of a song. We try things out and hear what holds together when the idea is sung.

An unfinished idea is enough to begin. Choose Songwriting if you want to spend this module making music of your own.

Max 10 participants

IMG 1946 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Didier Likeng

Didier Likeng leads a journey through gospel songs and rhythms from Africa. We sing, listen and work with the relationship between voice, rhythm and movement. The rhythm is part of the singing, not just something in the background.

Come if you want to sing repertoire beyond the songs you usually know. You will learn by joining the music and paying attention to its rhythm.

Teaching language: English

Module 3

Teachers: Louise Tuxen & Benjamin Jochimsen

Soul Sisters is for all women who want to sing in a gospel choir. Here we explore and express the different sides of being a woman through music and songs. We find our inner soul sister – and cultivate sister solidarity together. Soul Sisters has been a hit since we first had it on the program.

SommerGospel

Teacher: Didier Likeng

Men in Black is a gospel choir for men with Didier Likeng at the front. We work on rhythm, harmonies and the sound we can make with men’s voices. There is room for power, precision and a bit of attitude.

You will sing your part and hear how it fits with the others. If you want gospel in an all-male choir, this is the place to do it.

Teaching language: English.

IMG 2014 2 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Carla Jane

In this class we will work as a small choir. We will work on the personal responsibility each singer has when they don’t have the support of a big choir. We will work on sound, expression, dynamics and many other things that are needed in a smaller setting.

Max 25 participants

Sommergospel Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Claes Wegener

What can you do with a song when you step away from the set melody? Claes Wegener works with small ideas you can actually sing: a change of rhythm, a short phrase or an answer to another voice. We try them in the music and listen to what works.

Improvisation starts with making one choice and then another. Choose this class if you want more freedom in a lead without losing the song.

Max 15 participants

SommerGospel

Teacher: Anders Butenko

What are you saying when you sing the words? With Anders Butenko, we work on the story in a song and on the way you deliver it. A pause, a different emphasis or a change of timing can make the listener hear a line anew.

We try different ways through the same passage. This is for lead singers who want the words to do more than follow the melody.

Max 15 participants

IMG 2062 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Sarah Moshage

Your body is part of the sound when you sing a lead. Sarah Moshage works with the core voice and the connection between physical support and the sound you make. We use song phrases to hear and feel what a small adjustment can do.

The point is to make the technique useful when the music starts. Choose this module if you want to work with your voice from the inside and then put it straight into a song.

Max 15 participants

IMG 1955 | Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teachers: Trey McLaughlin, Mark De-Lisser & Hans Christian Jochimsen

A choir responds to the way you lead it. On this course, Trey McLaughlin, Mark De-Lisser and Hans Christian Jochimsen work with teaching a song, giving clear direction and shaping the music in front of a choir.

We look at what changes when you change a gesture or an instruction. If you lead a choir and want new ways to work with it, come and put your conducting into practice. This is not a beginner’s class. This is for people who already lead a choir.

SommerGospel

Teacher: Gerlev

Gerlev gives your body its own module in a week with a lot of singing. We move, take part in physical activities and shift our attention away from the music for a while.

Choose Body & movement if you want an active break in the middle of the music. You can return to the next song with fresh energy.

International Gospel - Gerlev Idrætshøjskole

Teacher: Per Hougaard

Per Hougaard opens up the work behind the sound desk. We look at how a mixer is built, how voices and instruments become a clear live mix and how to make a monitor mix. You will learn what to listen for when something is not working.

You do not need to know the equipment in advance. Come if you want to understand the mixer or get started with the sound musicians hear on stage.

Frederik Ullerup
